Nunca fueron buenos amigos; nuestros archivos hablan de los abusos de los castellanos de aqu\u00ed ariba contra los castellanos de abajo. Pero se soportaron durante siglos, hasta que el 13 de junio de 1813 sucumbi\u00f3 el coloso a manos napole\u00f3nicas y tras una enconada resistencia contra las tropas de Wellington.<\/strong><br><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tres notas caracterizan la historia de este fuerte: el haber servido de c\u00e1rcel para presos indignes (Garc\u00eda de Galicia, Alfonso VI de Le\u00f3n, Tom\u00e1s de Gournay, asesino de Eduardo II de Inglaterra); el haberse converido en f\u00e1brica de p\u00f3lvora (veinte quintales diarios de produc\u00edan en 1542) y el haberse asentado aqu\u00ed la primera escuela de formaci\u00f3n de artilleros que ha tenido Espa\u00f1a.<\/strong><br><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A pesar de que algunos Trast\u00e1maras como Juan II y su padre Enrique III tuvieron gusto por habitar el alc\u00e1zar, la decadencia fue inexorable. En 1739 un incendio destruy\u00f3 viguer\u00edas y techumbres.
